Pupil Mentor Colleague Friend

Today I had to give a colleague a heads up about a relationship that he has with another individual that was being viewed by the group who pays for our research as a conflict of interest in relation to our research and development. He is not just a colleague, but also a friend and mentor to me. He has pushed and encouraged me to excel to my maximum potential not just in his words but most importantly through watching his actions. Today in my talk with him I realized a past conversation I had with him where he had told me that I would surpass him and to use the Socratic aphorism he used  “Tis a lousy student that does not someday surpass his teacher.” My mentor thanked me today for not only being a friend and equal, but also a mentor to him.
